I understand that, but not all fonts support the full character set. So like it or not, you *will* be messing with fonts. Specifically, finding one that has the particular character you're looking for. Lots of fonts -- particularly decorative ones -- only have the basic letters, numbers, and symbols from a qwerty keyboard. I've even seen sets that only have the upper case letters.
Unicode defines a character set of around 20,000 characters IIRC. Good luck finding a font that actually has all those characters in it. So if you're looking for a specialized math character, I would suggest googling for a good math font.
In fact, I'll save you the trouble. Go to http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/
U+227B is there.
