When I open a Microsoft Word document with equations in OpenOffice.org, many of the symbols in the equations are not displaying. They print ok, and can be exported, but not seen in Writer (though Writer does leave a space for them as if they were there). If I double click on the equation, OpenOffice brings up a window with the whole equation in it (does that window have a name? I can't find a name for it). Also the symbols missing are always the same ones: equal, proportional, plus and minus, and (it seems) all Greek letters. In my searches I found examples of similar experiences except that zooming in fixed it for those people. In my case zooming does not help. I'm running on a Linux (Linux from scratch) computer. I also have the most recent video driver for my chip. It occurs to me that this could be a font issue, since (if I remember correctly) proportional and the Greek letters usually come from the symbol font (and maybe the others that aren't displaying could have?). If it is a font problem, I'm not sure how to go about solving it since I cannot get at the characters in the equations to change them. At this point it's more of an annoyance than a real problem, but it would be nice to sort out all the same.
Thanks, Marc
Which version of OOo are you using. If you are using one of the 1.9.x snapshots, this is a known issue.
Make sure you have the font called OpenSymbol installed on your computer. This could be causing the problem.
Very much appreciated. I had to copy the OpenSymbol font to a different location /usr/share/ghostscript/fonts.
Thanks, Marc
