What is the advantage of selecting NOT to allow MS

It seems to me everyone would choose to allow both
Windows and OpenOffice to open Microsoft format files.

The problem is that only one program can be the "default" opener for a file format, which will open it if you double-click its icon. No matter what you choose in the installation dialog of OOo, you will _always_ be able to open Microsoft Office files from both MS Office and OpenOffice.org, from the File->Open menu on either program. The frustration people experience is that if you check the boxes when installing OOo, it will change the default icons of the MSO files from those familiar to MSO users, to those used by OOo. People who don't know better think that OOo has hijacked their files and changed their format, which is not true at all. At least, OOo is polite and asks upon installing if you want to do this. MSO does _not_.
