It sounds like the workstations are clicking on setup.exe in the archive
directory instead of %installed_dir%\programs\setup.exe . I don't use
MS Windows much, so someone who knows more may chip in here.

I understand what you mean. I had read the setup manual so I did click on the right setup.exe file, that is the one in the intstalled folder on the server. It worked from the XP workstations but not for the Win98 workstations.

Aha! Interesting. I think I have found the solution.

My server is \\Tetra and my installation directory is \OOo so the setup program I used was
\\Tetra\shr\OOo\program\setup.exe
and that worked from the XP machines and from the documentation, this is supposed to be how we do it as I understand it. But it wouldn't run from the Win98 machines.

Browsing around though, I see there is a file called
\\Tetra\shr\OOo\OpenOffice.orgSetup

Although it is not in the \program folder, I gave it a try and it worked for the Win98 machines.

There should be a setup guide PDF file in the directory where you
extracted the archive that goes into more detail. It is also available at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/files/documents/75/1588/SETUP_GUIDE.pdf .

Yes, it is good, all 79 pages of it, but it doesn't deal with this.

Thanks for your help, Michael.

Cheers
Ken
