My problem is that many of the elements being copied from the web
site are html links. When I paste those into Calc, they remain
links and only links. I want to convert them to plain text but nothing
I have tried in OOo will do it.
I have to think that I've overlooked a setting or selection in OOo
somewhere.

Tools|AutoCorrect|Options|URL recognition.

Thanks, Bob, but I've already been there. Maybe I should have said
_obscure_ setting or selection.
The behavior is the same whether the option is selected or not. Styles don't appear to have any effect either.
Also, this is occurring in both OOo 1.1.4 and 1.9.69 using w98se. I
haven't tried in Linux, yet.

Hmmm... how exactly are you copying and pasting? A simple "Paste" seems to preserve links as links, but Edit|Past Special|Unformatted pastes as plain text. (Or, click and hold the paste icon until a menu appears, then choose "Unformatted text".)

As others have suggested, use Format|Default on selected cells to remove the hyperlink properties for entries that have pasted as hyperlinks.

Thanks for your perseverance. I wasn't approaching the difficulty from the point of view of the act of pasting, but how to alter the cells after the pasting had occurred.

Regardless of that, as I announced earlier today, once I quit passing by the
Menu Format|Default function, life resumed normal speed.
