hi joe

the file associations work for opening files from other (non-MS-Office and non-OOo) applications. so, if you're in Windows Explorer and want to open a .doc file by double-clicking it, it will open in OpenOffice (if you have checked the option in setup) or in Word (if you have left the options unchecked). if you first open Word, however, and open the file from within it, it will open in Word, no matter what the settings were. same for OOo.

hope this helped

What is the difference if check marks are added

vs. if

check marks are not added?

When you check the file types, Openoffice makes
itself the default for those types. So when you double click on them, they open
in OpenOffice.

I am using Windows XP. I have the three files types
selected (added check marks). When I am within Word
and double click on a Microsoft file, it opens
properly in .doc format. Spreadsheets also open
properly within Word.

Why is OpenOffice not "taking over my computer"?
If you also

had MS Office you might not want tt check these, if
you want the files to still open in MSO, otherwise I'd always check them.

I suppose if you did it once, OpenOffice'd still be
the default when you installed again, so it probably wouldn't make any
difference if you had previously set OpenOffice as the default.
