I think this rules out OO.
If it only messes up OOo - then it's an OOo problem. If it only messes up X11 - then it is an X11 problem.
My suggestion - stop using X11. Get NeoOffice/J - it's a build of OOo for Mac OS X that uses Java instead of X11. Not only will it bypass your X11 problem, it is a better program. It's all Aqua-fied. It's what I use on my PowerBook G3, and it's never given me a problem.

Again, if this problem only messes up X11 and X11 programs, it's not an OS problem, it's an X11 one.
