While I understand your frustration, you should say this to Microsoft.
In fact that's the only place where this can ever truly get solved.

The reason OOo CAN'T get the compatibility perfect is because they keep
their format secret to FORCE you to keep using their products and make
everyone else that does anything with you also use their products. The
EU is somewhat trying to force some interoperability on Microsoft but
they seem to be getting out of it.

Why not ask all your coworkers and clients to use OOo? It probably can
handle those complex documents better than MSO with less corruption.
Then you don't have to convert, and it's not like it costs them to
switch to OOo.
