Hi everybody,
My thanks to MadMonk and Chip Dunning for their helpful
comments, copied below with my replies where relevant.

Yes, it then remains the default, but that does not solve the problem; the
problem is losing it in the first place, at some point during my OOo
experiments.

No, I was intending them to open with Reader6 (on my system for some
time), but it's association with pdf files vanished about the same time as
my default printer! Clicking on that little icon (either right or left)
didn't
do anything, by the way.

The point here is that while trying out OOo, several things that used to
work suddenly stopped working, and it took me some time and effort
to get them back to normal. It isn't necessarily OOo as such: it may
well be one of my other programs having some kind of allergic reaction
to OOo! However, it is simply easier to stick with what was working
before, than to instal OOo and then have a major problem getting it all
working again.

Agreed, I suspect that it is some combination causing the trouble,
rather than any one singly, but I can't afford the time and effort it
would take to find out.

Sounds very likely!

It can, in fact; it includes Reader3 (I think), but I have had
Reader6 a long time, and always use that. Neither 3 nor 6
worked this time thought!

Exactly; and that is also what caused the problem with the
Roxio User Guide files. The problem disappeared after I
uninstalled OOo, and reinstalled Reader6.

In fact, I have since been able to access the OOo User Guide
pdf file for the first time. Now I can study it at leisure, and
then make a more informed decision on whether to have
another try at OOo.1.1.4, or wait until OOo2 comes out. I
sha'n't decide in a hurry, though,
Thanks again, and regards
Roger.
