thx for the tip.    I opened Format -- then  Conditional Formatting;   the 
first box was checked, so I unchecked  that.    Next I   (1)highlighted the  
desired cells   
(2)  clicked Format -- chose cells  -- background --  chose a color -- and 
clicked OK.   (3)  no change  -   cells are still black.
Then I clicked on Format again  -- and Condidtional  Formatting  -- and the 
first box is checked -- again.   Is OO  wanting  blood????               Ron
