Are these short cuts that appear on your desktop?  If double clicking
them, I'm guessing, will create new documents/spreadsheets for you to
use.

www.openoffice.org and probably more helpful is the documentation
portion : http://documentation.openoffice.org/

Normally users switching from MS Works ask if they can open documents
created by works in OOo. To pre-empt, the answer is 'yes' but
additional filters are required. Further information can be found
about this at the above locations.
