For more information on how to use OOo in general check out www.openoffice.org and probably more helpful is the documentation portion : http://documentation.openoffice.org/ Normally users switching from MS Works ask if they can open documents created by works in OOo. To pre-empt, the answer is 'yes' but additional filters are required. Further information can be found about this at the above locations. Have fun.
