Ok Brian, That are some good arguments you mentioned.
I don't know how the system is working when some DAU (btw. is this 3 letter word also known in australia(englisch?) In german it is used as "Dmmster Anzunehmender User" = User with the lowest IQ you can think of?) states a question on the website so that it finaly appears in this mailinglist.
Afair it is automated, isn't it?
As long as this DAU Human beeings are paying you and me for our help it is okay i think.
There is a nice "How To" out there how to ask questions the smart way. the english original by Eric Steven Raymond is translated in many different languages. When i have to deal with german native speaking persons with useless questins i point them to a translation of the english original: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
and telling them they have to go thru this page and if they can point out a propperly answerable question after that reading they will get my help. That works fine for me ;-) (and in the end for them too!)

SO HEREBY I, MARIO FROM GERMANY (OLD EUROPE; ON THE OTHER SIDE OF YOUR GLOBE) ADVISE YOU TO DO EXACTLY THE SAME! I DECLARE HEREBY THAT YOU, BRIAN FROM AUSTRALIA, ARE RESPONSIBLE TO REPLY TO ALL DAU-POSTERS WITH THAT URL! YOU HAVE TO DO THAT IN THE FOLLOWING WAY: Originalmessage to the list mail adress and CC#ed to the questionaskers Mailadress! ;-)

Chiao
Mario

P.S. I hope that my thinking in my motherlanguage was translated by my brain understandable in english without the use of stupid working computertranslation ;-)

Come on brian,
there are people out there, witch definetly have no idea what a computer is all about and they just want to use it like you use a car if you are not a mechanic.
Just press the start button and lets surf. (...) Not everybody could be an expert in the field that he/she is dealing with [e.g. see the american president ;-)]

Ok Mario,
The point is that many people seem think that all computers are the same, just different names on them. Many people are also capable of installing programs from the Internet, and from CD, without thinking about the consequences or knowing how to remove the programs.
I regularly get requests from those who found out later they should not have put that program on, or who put an antivirus program on but didn't read the instructions and didn't realize they had to update it. I am expected to spend hours cleaning up their PC, and showing them how to use their programs, for $10, including travel.
So when someone asks how to remove a program, without stating the type of PC (it could be an Amstrad, Tandy Coco, Commodore64 for all I know) or the operating system, I wonder if they could follow the instructions anyway.
This list seems to be becoming an easy to use version of the users guide and help files.
That's my little rant.
Bottom line is that this list often gets posts with insufficient information. Can we come up with a unified approach to this, say a designated person/persons to reply with a standard text message, so that a proper reply can be made to the users problem. Can the moderators send these kinds of posts back for more info before letting them on the list.

Brian
