On installing OOo, you are offered the option to associate MS Office files
with OOo. If you accepted this, the file associations were changed, but not
the files themselves. WordPad is usually the default for DOC files if Word
is not installed, will not open some DOC files (it cannot handle some of the
MS specialty formatting),. If the DOC file association was changed to OOo,
it effectively shifted everything, because both Word and WordPad associate
to the DOC filetype. WordPad is also used to open text files that are too
big for Notepad.

So ...

Are you (a) clicking on the document in a file manager to open it, and
assuming that WordPad will be started; or (b) opening WordPad and then
selecting to open the document, from within WordPad?

If (a), then you may have a problem with file associations still pointing at
OOo, which you say your colleague has now removed, so the chosen associated
software is no longer present to open the file. To test this, try
right-clocking on the file name and using the "Open With" selections to
navigate to forcing WordPad to be the program you open the file with. If
this fails or ...

if (b), then you may now have a problem with the formatting of the file.
WordPad can be choosy about which DOC format files it will handle. If you
edited a DOC file in OOo and saved it back, OOo may have created a file
whose formatting WordPad doesn't handle.
