I'd like more flexibility, too. In particular, for typographical reasons, I dislike centered titles, but, unfortunately, the presentation styles don't have any alignment settings.


I suspect the reason for the shortcomings is historical. Slide shows simply aren't supposed to be highly formatted documents. They're supposed to be something that be created quickly, and with a minimum of effort - and that means with limited options. In this respect, Impress is really just following PowerPoint's needs.
