OK, well I apologize: After checking, it's not OOo 1.1.0 that I'm using but the release I downloaded 3 days ago, 1.1.4, french language ! I'm a brand new OOo user, already enthusiast. (Seemed funny to me that I managed to download an old release...)

Joined is a screenshot in .png with what happens to me... (not sure the list accepts attached files...?) The default font size is set on 30 pt.
Did I found a bug ???
I don't think so. I just downloaded and tried 1.1.4, and posted the resulting screen shot as http://needleswebs.com/dev/mathdisplay1_1_4.jpg
Everything seems to work as expected. Must be a configuration problem on your end. Does font sizing in Writer work as you'd expect?
