Thanks for answering, Peter and others on the list.

Maybe I should uninstall WORD as long as I can learn and use OOo 1.1.4.
For whatever reason, I cannot click on WORD documents anymore and have
tread.them they simply won't open..
.
(I .only get them open if I do an OPEN WITH, either WINWORD or OOo. This
happened I guess after I uninstalled WORD 2000 from the ADD/Remove folder.
I reinstalled it last nite when I couldn't get my many WORD docs to open.)

If I uninstall WORD, will those files take on the(seagull )logo of
OpenOffice.org?

I don't know if it will happen automatically or not. You may have to change the file associations.

Right now, I have to OPEN WITH > OOo, and it keeps that title - extension on
the title bar - until I close the file and then it goes back to WORD file.
I have to do it everytime to get into my files.

This is a weird problem. If you uninstalled word, it shouldn't do

anything. :( >

What are the extension on these files? >

No extension when I click on any of my WORD files...just a gray window with
the blue title bar that doesn't even'
say the name of the file which I created ( just says MICROSOFT WORD). If I
do an "OPEN WITH" WINWORD,
the name of file appears and then MS Word. But all links imbedded in the
text don't activate. That's what I need.
When I OPEN WITH OOo, I get that extension after name of file:

Maybe I am using the wrong word. By extension I mean the three letters after the . in the file name. Like in normal.dot the extension is .dot.

What is the extension of the files you are having trouble with, .doc, .sxw, dot?

If they are showing properly and you want them to open with OOo in the
future, when you save them do a *File > Save As*. When the dialog box
pops up, click on the drop down box that says File Type, scroll up and
choose OOo text document (.sxw). This will turn it into a OOo doc
instead of a Word doc.

It changed to OOo just until I closed it, then it showed again with the
WORD logo and extension.

What where the three letters after the dot for these files?

Once while trying different open with's a window pops up with NORMAL, and
clicking on that brings this little message:
"The file is in use by another application or user:
C:\WINDOWS\...\templates\Normal.dot "

The dreaded normal.dot. Issues with this file are what drove me to the brink!

Rather than going through 40 some file docs. I created to change each to
OpenOffice files, would it make sense to uninstall OOo. and then immediately
re-install (when I find a site for that) rather than have to do the OPEN
WITH operation each time I want to open any of them? Would be a big time
saver.

You are talking about two different processes. Un/reintalling only changed the program that opens the file. They will still MS Word (.doc) files.

Opening and saving as .sxw changes them to OOo files.

Also, if I uninstall WORD first, then uninstall OOo.1.1.4 and reinstall,
will my created WORD docs be safe and
accessible? That's critical, because I have been saving on research
(copied from Web pages) for 3 years.

Word has a lot of evils, but has a few advantages over OOo. Uninstalling
it shouldn't be a big problem since you have OOo installed now.

Your word docs should be safe if they are in the My Documents folder or some place like that.
