Hi there. I'm new to the mac platform and I just couldn't afford the MS Office X right now. I stumbled upon several other options for it. I've seen Luxuriousity and OpenOffice and NeoOffice.

Tell me, how different is the OpenOffice and NeoOffice/J? Although I kinda think they're the same, NeoOffice/J does not need X11 to run. I just need to know. I have both software installed right now.

NeoOffice/J is a port of the OpenOffice program to the Mac using Java. NeoOffice/J uses the native Mac windowing and rendering and also the native printing. The result is that you do not need X-11 and NeoOffice/J looks and behaves much more like a normal Mac Program. The downside is that being a port, it is a bit behind the latest version of OpenOffice and while it inherits any OOo bugs, it may have a few more of its own. Also, some features may not yet be implemented in NeoOffice/J.

Oh and by the way, is there a way in NeoOffice/J that you can actually assign different icons to different file types so that I can easily arrange and and identify which one is a Text document from a spreadsheet or draw or something else. Please advise if there's a patch that does this.

That is odd. On my eMac at work and the Macs I use at home, the Writer and Spreadsheet documents do have different icons. They are similar. iIf you make them too small, you may not be able to distinguish the difference. Arrange by kind should also show them differently.

Also, in NeoOffice/J, when I decide to close the last remaining window of a NeoOffice document, the entire programs shuts down. That means, when I decide to open another document, it will take a long time again to initialize and start. Do you have a fix for this little bug? Please advise.

This is inherited behavior in NeoOffice/J from OpenOffice. I suggest that if you need to open NeoOffice regularly, just make a minimized blank document and leave it parked in the dock.

I do prefer the NeoOffice/J versus the OpenOffice only because it does away with the X11.

i have both on my eMac at work. I just downloaded the latest beta of NeoOffice/J as it has Word Perfect import filters.
I have a lot of WP documents and would like to bring them into OOo or NeoO/J. I tried it and I get all the text, but the nice tables are not there, just the text all run together. Not perfect yet, but progress.

I hope you enjoy OpenOffice or NeoOffice/J as much as I do.
