Yes, this is what I mean. I downloaded 1.1.4, but stopped short of installing it for fear it would "break" my existing installation. OO's installation instructions warn against installing a new installation over an existing one. Also, I would be delighted to test new/latest versions, but still need the safety net of being able to fallback to a stable version. Basically I'm asking about the risks/issues of running 2 versions in parallel.
is completely safe to have two or even all three versions installed at the same time.
the default OOo directory in FC has the name changed (for example in FC3 is .rhopenoffice1.1, i don't remember the exact name from FC2) and will not interfere with the others.
also is safe to install the rpm version of 1.9.xx, because the packages have different names: the ones from FC are named openoffice.org-xxxxxx.rpm and the ones from OOo openofficeorg-xxxxxx.rpm
Is it sufficient simply to specifiy a unique installation directory? Will there be issues with any files in my home directory, such as .sversionrc or some of the other "1.4 megabytes copied to one's home directory" from the installation instructions?
there is no need even to specify a unique installation directory, every package has its own specific one
