Just made a presentation in OpenOffice with sound. So sound must be possible. 
Does run on both
linux and windoze, except that version transfered to and from linux do seem to 
lose the sound files.
Same is true for saving OpenOffice as Powerpoint format: no sound. I'd to 
retach all WAV soundfile again.
Seems windows only understands that format.
