If you can get into spadmin, try changing lpr (a bsd default) to lp (that will hopefully get you to cups or whatever print system you're using.

If that works and you have a stand alone inkjet type printer, you might want to try my two-sided print utility duplexpr (on sourceforge & freshmeat). I set my OOo printer to dplx (part of duplexpr) and it prints everything two-sided for me even though my printer does not support duplex printing in hardware.

My problem was that I couldn't find spadmin using find; someone on the
list turned me on to locate. Having found it with locate, I ran spadmin
to change the printer command from lpr to kprinter.

Apparently you object to kprinter? I can't help you then, sorry.
Actually I don't know what kprinter even is; there's no man page or info
on it.... Outside of OO, I just use lpr as always....

I don't object to it, just to the fact that I have to run two printing functions, first the OO, then up comes the gui for the kprinter.

There _must_ be a better way to make things run than by suggesting to people, "Oh, if you can't make OO print, send your stuff through kprinter."
