Kate,
Several folks have recommended NeoOffice/J, and so do I. Go to the address given (www.neooffice.org, I think), and follow the links to the download page. After you download and install, make sure you download the latest patch. The most recent patch includes all subsequent patches, and you install a patch the same way you installed NeoOffice in the first place--just double-click the installer package. After you've installed and patched, drag the NeoOffice/J icon to your dock. It starts like any other application.

If you use the X-11 version of OOo, you'll have to d/l a bunch of fonts, and do a little housecleaning to get the program running well on the Mac. I do hope you've got Jaguar or Panther, because 10.1 won't run OOo or NeoJ.

I'm not quite a newbie and trying to install this program has left me feeling like I've never used a computer before! I went through all the installation steps, followed all instructions and tips I saw, and I can't get open office to run! When I click on the "start open office" it keeps asking me to locate obordorOX (I think that was how it was spelled?) and I have no clue what that is or where to find it. I tried uninstalling and starting all over and that didn't seem to help. My machine is running OS X 10.2.8 if that helps.

Help!
