Hi Charles,
maybe this (taken from one of my previous posts) can help you solve your
problem?

For the benefit of future on-lookers:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Yes: get rid of foomatic-filters-ppds and install foomatic-db-hpijs
foomatic-hpijs and (maybe) cupsys-bsd
Ennio-Sr :-)

I have installed hpijs, which is used by CUPS - is this what you were suggesting?

the packages I was talking about are named (and 'apt-gettable'):
foomaic-db-hpijs
foomatic-hpijs
cupsys-bsd (I've installed this one, but I'm not sure it is essential).

I was having problems with a Deskjet930C (same family as yours): could
print from all applications except OOo. After sending a post to the list
a few weeks ago I found somewhere about changing the
<foomatic-filtes-ppds> for the two listed above. In this way I solved my
problem :-)

Cheers,
        Ennio.

I have installed foomatic-db-hpijs, but apt-get couldn't find foomatic-hpijs. Tried printing again, still no luck.

Oops ... My fault ;( foomatic-hpijs doesn't exist: it's simply "hpijs"
(perhaps I'd drunk too-much wine when I wrote that ;) ).

Anyway:
the foomatic packages which result as 'installed' at present in my box are:
$ dpkg -l |grep foomatic

ii foomatic-db 20050118-1 linuxpr..ng.org printer sup. - database
ii foomatic-db-engine 3.0.2-20050114 linuxpr..ng.org printer sup. - programs
ii foomatic-db-hpijs 1.5-20050118-1 linuxpr..ng.org printer sup. - database
ii foomatic-filters 3.0.2-20050114 linuxpr..ng.org printer sup. - filters

Then, of course, there is 'hpijs' and any other packages required by
those listed above (if, after installation, it still doesn't work, do a:
$ apt-cache show pkg_name
for each of the above listed packages and verify that you aren't missing
any required pkg.

I've checked and none appear to be missing

How do I change foomatic-filters-ppds for foomatic-db-hpijs?

You have simply to remove this pkg: if you have all those listed above (and any missing dependency), then you restart cupsys and hopefully you'll be done :-)

Regards,
Ennio.

Well, I removed foomatic-filters-ppds using dpkg and restarted cupsys and the problems were still there :(
Printing direct still produced no result and printing to file produced a monochrome output.
BTW, to get round this problem, I print by exporting to PDF and using XPDF or GV to actually print the file
