i suggest you create a new template with colums preformatted as text or numbers. then, when you wish to import data into it, just open a new document based on that template instead of the standard one. would this work? i haven't tried it yet.

How can I tell it that I want my inserted text to remain as a string and not be converted to a date? This is for importing a rather large file of semi-random strings, so I'd rather not have to prepend every entry with a ' character.
