Good question. Now for a quick answer:

Java is necessary for use of the following in OOo:

      * JDBC drivers
      * Using the xslt, flat xml filters et cetera
      * Using Java applets in OOo
      * Using Java-based languages in the scripting framework
      * Any autopilot/wizard or autopilot/wizard generated report that
        uses the OOo database interface
      * all accessibility functions
      * the testtool and QaTestDev

These are from memory so beware.
