Good question. Now for a quick answer:
Java is necessary for use of the following in OOo:
* JDBC drivers
* Using the xslt, flat xml filters et cetera
* Using Java applets in OOo
* Using Java-based languages in the scripting framework
* Any autopilot/wizard or autopilot/wizard generated report that
uses the OOo database interface
* all accessibility functions
* the testtool and QaTestDev
These are from memory so beware.
