All:

I ran into a not-so-little problem, working on a project with _The Peshitta_.

None of my UTF-8 fonts display the Syriac sub-range. (Ux0700 - Ux074F)

Arial, Bitstream Cyberbase, Bitstream CyberCJK, and Bitstream Cyberbit
just skip it.
Code2000 just displays white boxes.
Courier displays black boxes.
TITUS Cyberbit Basic jumps from Ux0700 to Ux0900 leaving white space.

a) If somebody has those fonts on their system, can they confirm that
the Syriac subrange is skipped on those fonts. [ I'm trying to figure
out if this is a problem with my fonts, OOo, winXP, or something
else.]

b) Can somebody point me to a UTF-8 font which includes Syriac, _and_
Syriac works for them.

Some rambling:

The range (Ux0700 - Ux074F) displays in the Linux/Gnome character tool with the exception of U+072{D,E,F}, using, inter alia, Arial Unicode and Vera Sans.

Likewise in e.g gedit.(probably Vera Monospace)

In OOo (Linux 1.14 & 1.9.79), largely similar results to those quoted above, with the exception of the 'Free Sans' font, which appears (to my untrained eye as far as Syriac is concerned) to work, and Code2000, which works for most of the characters.

Same results with 1.1.4 and 1.9.79. Don't have an XP installation to test.

Not sure that adds much.
