Hi Richard,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my SOS.
I have run a search and have no soffice.exe files. I had intended to run a new OO alongside the old one, just to make sure it was working.

Since from your original mail I gather you're running Linux, the file you should be looking for is named "soffice" (no .exe extension). In the directories featuring that "soffice" program, you should also find a "setup" program that will allow you to uninstall the various versions you may still have on your computer as per Urska's instructions.

Two questions:
1. I did wonder last night whether it was to do with .sversionrc. I deleted the old file as instructed, which contained:
"[versions] StarOffice 6.0=file:///home/richard/.staroffice6.0en
OpenOffice.org 1.0.1=file:///home/richard/.openoffice"
The current .sversionrc just contains"[versions]". This seems in part to be where the problem lies? I have changed the new file to read "OpenOffice.org 1.1.3=file:///home/richard/OpenOffice.org1.1.3" This has got openoffice booting again, but still with the old one, since the old .sversionrc is still in trash. When I renamed that file (to aviod deleting it), OO tried to open, but gave up. It didn't seem to notice the new version of .sversionrc

The .sversionrc is not the only thing involved in the running of OOo. From the various versions you've listed as having at one stage or other on your machine, you must still have some lingering installs of OOo and StarOffice. Depending on how you start the program, you may be hitting the executable (soffice) of one of these versions. From your earlier mails I was under the impression that you were using shortcuts on your desktop to start the product. If these shortcuts haven't been updated to point to your OOo 1.1.3 version, it's likely they're still starting OOo or StarOffice from wherever these previous versions were installed.

So...

2. What's the cleanest way so remove the various Oo and Staroffice files? Do I just delete them, or what?

Normally run the "setup" executable found in the installation and picking "Remove" from the options offered. Failing that, removing the various directories involved and the .sversionrc file might do the trick, bearing in mind that depending on the way the product was installed, it may be split over two locations, one shared installation for instance in /opt/OpenOffice.org and then multiple user installations in /home/<user>/OpenOffice.org. The place where the executables are (not just links) is what really constitutes the install, the user directories only contain the respective users' preferences.

I hope this information helps you, but I would suggest also asking whoever installed those versions in the first place to assist you, as s/he might be able to point you to the install locations.

Cyrille
