No to all your questions. I didn't uninstall MSO yet because I can still can read my old MSO files.I do have OOo1,14 and it appears everything is running OK at this time. I still haven't figured out how to get my old MSO files to read properly, I have one MSO file with 3 tables on one page and OOo puts two of the tables on a second page and them screws up the height it the cells which make the table much larger and caused them to be placed on the second page. The help files say something about using the set-up program to modify MSO files but I can't find anything about a set-up program

It appears that installing openoffice wiped out all of my "short-cuts" and I can't open any of my extra browsers except MSIE and MSOE. I tried a "System restore" which got some of my "short-cuts" back but when I try to open Thunderbird,or Netscape they flash on for a split second and then disappear. I have tried to click on to the *.exe programs and the same thing happens. It appears that all the MS programs seem to work. I am using a Compaq Presario SR1220NX , MSXP home addition .512 MB Memory,80 GB HD.

That is kind of bizarre. I don't really think that OOo could have caused this error.
However, if OOo is the only thing you installed or changed and then this happened, who knows.
My first suggestion would be to uninstall OOo (restoring the system checkpoint probably didn't do this) and then see if the problem persists. If it does, I would download a registry checker or fixer and make sure your registry is still good. Outside of that, I don't know.
HTH,
We use very similar machines at the office and they all have OpenOffice.org (1.1.4) installed. I don't think OOo is the culprit.... but ... which version did you install? Did you uninstall anything else? There's a know bug which occurs when you uninstall the 60 day demo of Microsoft Office. It causes Microsoft Works to stop working. Did your antiirus download a new engine in the interim? Some systems have had trouble with AVG 7. Is all the 'built-in' software still running? My dad's system had so much factory-installed 'special offers' software that the computer ran like a slug.
