I agree with the suggestions. In fact when my XP install gets into a
knot, usually logging off / rebotting will solve the issue (as it does
with most things M$).

Failing the nice attempts, how about the universal hard reboot -  turn
it off - on a lap top usually holding down the power on button will do
the trick.

Of course this will mean that you will loose anything that is not
saved and is not recommended but I've had to do it from time to time
(as I'm sure many of us have that use windows).
