Thanks for that.  Acrobat seems to work; but leaves one mystery: the 
list of fonts from Acrobat looks familiar; but within the original sxw 
file there's a reference to a font called "JOAN" - which doesn't appear 
in the pdf list, doesn't appear in the dump of the old w98 
windows\fonts folder, and doesn't exist in my memory either :-)  I 
guess it's not important now - I've obtained enough info to resurrect 
the documents, which is what I needed (thanks!) - but I am rather 
curious as to what the JOAN font might be from.

BTW, File > AutoPilot > Install fonts from the web as the well as the 
new dictionaries option don't do anything for me - the disk clatters a 
moment or two, then nothing.  This is on 1.1.4.  What's supposed to 
happen??
