Regular expressions are are used to represent non-printing (and thus not visible on your screen) characters. If you search the help file for regular expressions, you'll find a listing of them. One thing I find weird about the implementation is that paragraph mark is $ in the find box and \n in the replace box.

p.s. Actually, you can make them visible using 'view / view non-printing characters', but what you'll see is not the regular expression, but a graphical representation of the non-printing characters.
