Im sorry that I do not have more data for you. I was in my second day of 
exploring the new installation of Open Office.  One of the applications 
hung up but I cannot tell which one. I solved the problem by ending all 
XP processes associated with OO in the Windows task manager and have 
been using it successfully since.

The big problem is that there was no indication of a process hanging up 
so I continued to try to open different OO applications to no avail.

It seems to be working well now. Thanks for your resonse. I look forward 
to being abetter user.

Little more info required in order to find problem (especially since
there is no error message)...
