You can install OOo in the sure and certain knowledge that (with one
proviso) it will not interfere or conflict with any MS Office
installation. I seriously doubt that you will want to uninstall OOo, in
fact when you see version 2.0 (to be released in the next few months) I
think you might even want to leave MS Office behind. However,
uninstalling OOo does not affect any 'so-called' common files.

The one proviso is, that during the OOo install process you will be
offered the option to open MS Office documents with OOo. IMNSHO the
wording of this option confuses inexperienced computer users and should
be changed. I your case I recommend that you do NOT check the boxes for
this option, as it will change the file associations for MS Office
documents to be opened automatically will OOo.

Apart from this and keeping in mind that OOo is not a mickey mouse clone
of MS Office, go ahead, install and enjoy.
