OpenOffice Help documentation, Calc should invoke the TextImport dialog;
however, when I open the file, it appears in the Text Document module
rather than Calc and the TextImport dialog never appears. Although I
have Excel (97 SR2) I don't want to have to load it into Excel and then
save in .xls format, then load it into OpenOffice. That seems to be a
very long way around this problem. What then is the simplest way to
load the data into OpenOffice Calc?

Jim: You didn't see this reply. Does it work? Because that is what is in
the help.

If you still think the help should be changed, then maybe you could
register and file an issue and suggest the text. Everyone works together
here to make it better!

What Help actually says is:

"Importing a CSV File
     1. Choose File - Open.

     2. In the File type field, select the format "Text CSV" from the
dropdown menu. Select the file and click Open. When a file has
the .csv extension, the file type is automatically recognized.

     3. You will see the Import text files dialog. Click OK.

     4. If the csv file contains formulas as formulas, clear the
Formulas check box in Tools - Options - Spreadsheet - View, so
that you see the calculated results in the table.
        "
So either give your file the .csv extension or follow the
        directions above.

You might also want to get teh user guide
http://tinyurl.com/5u8bt which has a explanation of this process
and how to deal with fixed width fields
