Actually, I did have some crashes lately.
To troubleshoot these I had to put my CPU at half speed (ouch!)
It's probably a conflict between two SPD's on my (alas) different RAM chips.
I hope you find your problem.
I hope so too, since I spent �85,- euro on my 512MB RAM extension. OpenOffice 1.1.4 runs fine, but the 2.0 beta crashes all the time. Killing the OOo 2.0 processes allows me to run my system normally. It never caused a complete crash as probably caused by my conflicting RAM.

Here's a real shot in the dark.
It isn't a problem I've seen for several years, but a faulty/marginal video card can also produce the symptoms you describe, including not having problems with some apps and near meltdown with others. If your mainboard has an integrated video chipset and shares system RAM for video memory, the speed difference you mention may truly contribute to the problem. For that, you can try switching memory sticks between sockets.
