You can't really do it the way that I think that you are doing it. I
think that you have to:
1) create some kind of filled circle, with a hole in the middle
2) convert it to a Bezier curve
3) adjust the bottom of the circle by adding more points to create the
shape of the ribbon ends
4) copy and paste in the exact same position
5) convert the top copy [which should be the copy that was just
pasted] to a copy with invisble fill with solid lines
6) adjust these lines to create the overlap appearance that you desire
I'm practising with the tool right now. Would you like me to make a
copy for you? I could post it on my personal web site for you when I'm
done.
