Don't be hesitant. Acronyms drove me crazy
until I discovered that there is an on-line
dictionary of acronyms.
For "afaik" and other acronyms a Google
search with keywords
afaik acronym
the text that Google provided with the first
link was "As Far As I Know".

Current email practice is to (over) use
acronyms. After 25 years in computer
science, I have sometimes thought that I
was in the wrong field as I strongly
object to gratituitous acronyms (or GA ;-).
