I have installed 1.1.1 and upgrades through 1.1.4 as well as 1.9.79 on my Win 98SE without disabling either Mcafee virus scan or my Zone Alarm firewall, and had no problems. I don't think I would install any major software with any documents open and unsaved. That's standard procedure as far as I am concerned. Of course, most MS product installs demand a re-start, which OO.o does not. I probably would leave my email client (Pegasus) and browser (IE and Firefox) open unless the install told me not to (and many installs will). Hope that helps.
