Second question first: yes. For most features OOo is very similar to MS. You'll find differences in terminology that can be frustrating, but I've found that there is very little that I can't do with open office that I used to do in Excel.
First question: Formulae - yes pivot tables - no experience filters - yes validation - yes tc
