Stand-alone viewers exist for MS Office files meaning that you don't have to have Office installed to view them. These viewers are freely available from Microsoft.

So I have to use Microsoft Windows? What if I find GNU/Linux better for
me?

If you prefer GNU/Linux, you launch Open Office and you import the files. ;-)

This means that we have to have "simple" lightweight viewers for OOo files to avoid people downloading a 60Mb installer when they just want to read a document.

I'm not talking about simple viewers, I'm talking about people changing
their ways and editing documents that aren't in secret formats.

I understand and I try to contribute to change their minds too, but it's not easy. I installed OpenOffice at the office and now the boss complains because the documents he typed home in MS Word are messed up in some places...
