I mostly use the signature of my mail to do some positive explanation, like - in (double) Dutch:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - oo.o - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- Door mij verzonden office-documenten zijn gemaakt in OpenOffice.org: -
- *Handig * Modern * Professioneel * Compatibel * Gn dure licenties* -
- Vlot en betrouwbaar daar mee aan de slag? Zie http://www.nouenoff.nl -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - oo.o - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Is Ms.doc a standard, easily used by all kind of apps?
Yes, if you've only simple dcuments.
No, if more complex contents and formatting are involved.

Encouraging people: OK
Waiting for 2.0: not so bad.
Irritating them: rather not.

Kind regards,

Cor

I think this in general is a great idea. However, I would /suggest/,
instead of sending them a file. "If you can't open this, fix it.
Download a better office suite." Personally I think that MSO is great.
As long as you don't have to pay for it out of your own wallet. :-D I
have been quite successful distributing CDs and USB disks that say
"Click here to open the file" and below that "Click here to open the
file if you have Microsoft <insert MS product name here>". I think
that would be a better idea. Maybe have a section about "What is
OO.o?"/"The advantages of OO.o"?

But isn't there prior art to this? Was M$ involved with the development

Yes, of course there's prior art. In a just world, if Microsoft even tried to enforce this blatantly improper patent, they'd be liable to prosecution, and their lawyers to disbarment for barratry and abuse of process. But Microsoft has enough cash reserves to litigate anyone (except, perhaps, IBM) into bankruptcy, not to mention their adorable little trick (now being emulated by SCO) of misbehaving in court until the judge loses his temper and then whining about judicial bias. --- John W.
