Hi,

In our company I use Open Office on quite a few PC's. All of our PC's run Windows XP Pro, with all of the users logging onto accounts that are set up as "limited users." On some of those PC's, with no noticeable pattern, when they attempt to double-click a .doc or .xls file, they get an error message that includes the file path and name with the message that the file they're trying to open is not valid win32 application.

When I log them off, and log on with my administrative account, I can double-click on those files and they will open in open office. In some cases, even after doing the latter, the user (logged on as themselves) are still unable to open the file by double-clicking on it.

If they right-click on the file and select "open with..." and then browse to the open office executable, double-click it, and check the box to always use this application with that file type, one of two things will happen. Either open office will not appear in the "open with" window in order to make the association, or it will. In either case they will still receive the error message that the file "is not a valid win32 application." Sometimes .doc file types will open, and be associated, and only .xls files won't take the association, or the problem will be the same with both. In the latter case, often open office (as mentioned above) will not appear in the "open with" window.

Regardless of the aforementioned problem, it will always be possible to open the files by going through open office's "open document" link in the start >> all programs menu. It is just more convenient to retain the ability to open the files by double-clicking them.

One last thing. Where there is no problem with the file association, and any related file type can be opened by open office by double-clicking it there will still be one issue. The icon for a .doc file will change to the seagull after the file association is made. However, even after the association has been made, a .xls file type icon, as seen in windows explorer, will not change to the seagull, but will stay with the default appearance.

Thanks you very much for your time.

Regards,
Dave
