Perhaps the answer is obvious to everyone but me.

If it is suspected the person (OP) may not have seen a reply on the list because they aren't subscribed, how does one conclude the OP will see some additional response and that it is reasonable to clutter the list with these posts?

I suggest it would be more useful to reply directly *ONLY* to the OP and not copy the list. </rant>

If you look real close, I bet that the in the To or CC box the users address was there. That is how we conclude the user will see it.

The reason we do not reply directly is that if I reply directly, and CPH replies directly, and Tamblyn replies directly, etc..., then this poor user gets several e-mails with the same message.

IMO, if we have new users asking for help, we need to tailor our service to be a user friendly as possible to them and not worry about a few extra e-mails in the list. In the grand scheme of things, I would bet there are most 5% of e-mails of this nature in the list.

<rant>I wish people would use opening tags in their e-mails when they have closing tags. Also, when someone wants to start a new thread with a new subject line, they should start a new e-mail, not reply to an old one.</rant>

Furthermore, we could not have wasted like 20 e-mails on this thread if you had just gone back and read the archives to see that this has been addressed SEVERAL times before.

3) Scan the mailing list archives for related messages. You can search
 the users list here <<http://tinyurl.com/6edyk>>.

Imagine that you just downloaded OOo for the first time and weren't very computer savvy and you had a question. You have already braved the OOo website and found the mailing list address and you sent a question. You don't know much about the Internet, so you don't know about subscribing to lists or things like that. You ask a question and would like a response. One never comes, so you abandon OOo thinking it was a joke because the customer service didn't respond. If we CC the user this solves the problem.

People that post to this list don't always get what OOo is or open source and that volunteers answer this list, not like a customer service department. We need to be nice to the new users so that they become experienced users.

Just my $.02.
