Brian,

It looks like you have had your questions concerning file association
answered.

Congratulations for choosing OOo for this task. I would recommend
staying away from Microsoft Word 2000 (or any other Microsoft format)
since they are proprietary formats. The university will be much better
off if open formats, like OpenOffice.org, is used.

Dear Sir

I have been using Microsoft Word 2000 to transcribe historical documents for a University archive. To date, about 6000 are 'in the bag'. Today, thinking that OpenOffice.org 1.1.x could be a complimentary word processing programme, I downloaded it and had a look at what it can do. I saw that I could still open my MS Word documents. I chose a trivial one and it opened as an OpenOffice document. I changed it slightly and went to see if the original MS Word document contained the same alteration. I was surprised to find that the MS Word document opened as an OpenOffice text document and that all of my MS Word 2000 documents now open as OpenOffice text documents. I do not know how to revert back to MS Word format.

I would like to be able to change from the MS Office Word format to the OpenOffice text document format, and back again. Is it possible to do that, or am I now stuck with the OpenOffice format ?

The OpenOffice.org programme appears to be very good. I like it and I am sure that I will get used to it without too much hassle, but the ability to easily alternate between it and MS Word 2000 would be a bonus.

The HELP section appears to be very large and comprehensive. Perhaps the answer to my problem is there, but it will take me ages to digest and understand it, and I should be spending my time transcribing my documents.

So, can I change from MS Word format to OpenOffice text format, and back again ? Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I will second this statement. I will add to this in that I was involved with the recovery of some archived documents a few weeks ago. What a nightmare. They were in WordPerfect, Old MS Office, Corel Draw and a few other formats. The person that started this couldn't get most of them opened, he didn't have all the file filters installed in his MS Office to even open some of the older MS Office files.

Who knows what version the MS Office file formats will be in five years from now. At least with OOo file formats, I can unzip the document and pull the text in any text editor.

I ended up converting all documents into OOo and people are much happier. Now they don't have to go and purchase a new program for file access. Of course there are those times that MS Office won't even open that document that was just saved two minutes ago that OOo will. :) This is a great way to save someones but and make a great name for OOo.
