The purpose of the three Microsoft choice is to establish file
associations: what program will open the file type when that file is
double clicked. It does not change the file in any way. A *.doc file
can be opened by MS Word regardless of that file's file association. It
can also be opened by OOo (Openoffice.org).
The icon used for a *.doc file depends upon the file association.
If during installation you selected MS Word, then the *.doc files will
have the OOo icon. If a *.doc file is double clicked, OOo will launch
and open that *.doc file. If during installation you did NOT select MS
Word, the *.doc files will have the MS Word icon. Double clicking on a
*.doc file will launch MS Word, and the *.doc file will be opened in
it. In either case, the *.doc files are exactly the same except for the
icon used.
