What is the problem?
This is a guess. What do you have your
preferences set as far as file extensions are concerned? If you have set them
so that file extensions are not shown (perhaps this is default?),
the attachment will not show an attachment. Another possibility is
that it was saved without a file extension.
Have you opened OOo first and then tried to
open this file using File > Open or Control+O?

From one source I get Attached .sxw text files thatwork fine. The .sxc spreadsheet attachments comes
from another source (another sender). In both cases
the extensions show up in the original E-mail itself
When I open the attachments to the E-Mail with the .sxw attachemnts, they open fine. When I open the
attachments to the E-Mail with the .sxc attachments,
the .sxc file extension is gone. In both cases I used
the same opening procedure. With this new
information, can anyone say what the problem is?
How do I find the file extension preferences to see what they are set at?

You need to eliminate a variable because right now you're trying to correct the problem based on the *assumption* that your computer is the source of the failure You haven't provided any information that validates that assumption.
Can you have the party who sends the .sxw files send you a spreadsheet as well? How about someone else outside the present set? (Me, for example.) This will tell you a lot more about where to look for the source of the problem.
What procedure do you use to open the attachments? Do you right click on the attachment in the T-bird window and select Open or do you save it to disk first? What happens if you do the opposite of whichever approach you presently use?
I would like to answer your question about where to look, but I don't use XP so I'd probably be wrong.
