I have brought this up at on my local linux user group list, when you send an e-mail it has to be sent to all users on the list, this takes time, so you are going to experience a delay which depends on, I gues things like

speed of your connection
speed of server connection
speed of clients server connection at the mail end
and perhaps speed of a connection if someone is running their own mail server



If there is a problem with the server, your message will probably end up being bounced, however the list serv software is pretty clever.
