I know that some functions require Java, but Java is not required to download, install, or use OpenOffice. Is it required in the new version?
According to a recent thread on discuss, OOo2 requires java for several, function-critical components (i.e., writer wizards). While OOo1, without java, was fully functional except for some esoteric functions, OOo2 seems to really need it.
OTOH, there's significant progress in getting the desired functionality going with GCJ (thanks to the RedHat people) so OOo2 may be a strict open source tool again soon.

In August, 2003, I initiated RFE 18499, to address the matters of how, what, why, when and where Java is used in OOo instead of vague replies to the question of "for what is it needed?" It is recently receiving some activity, notably because Java is no longer just a nice-to-have option to enable some "assistive technologies" in Version 2.
According to the most recent update: "------- Additional comments from mh Sun Apr 10 02:31:24 -0700 2005 -------
I started documenting this on http://translation.services.openoffice.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/OOoJava
please feel free to add any further information, e.g. a list of recognized and tested JRE would be helpful." ------------
I encourage anyone with technical knowledge about the use of Java in OOo to participate in making this topic more understandable and useful to the user population.
Resume normal speed.
