And then stuff about lo. SUrely you don't need that...? Well, there is this, and I don't think this is normal for lo:

Is that normal for lo to be transmitting all that crap?

This could be rather lower-level than the other posters have suggested.
What sort of network card do you have? Assuming it's a PCI card, how does it show up in lspci (run as root)?
If you run /sbin/ifconfig, what results do you get?
