I cannot wholly agree with the referral Diane.  It is to _this_ list 
that these people will come to in their quest for help.  They will 
never willingly want to get involved in what they perceive as our 
petty squabbles by joining a list whose main reason de`terre is to 
argue the fine points.

I agree the thing has been talked to death, and that each of us will 
do as we see is the proper thing to do.  So lets drop it, and each of 
us get on with the job at hand, that of answering the users questions 
if we can.  If we cannot elicite enough info from the user because of 
intentional version munging or whatever, the best we can do is 
suggest they get and install the most recent stable.  They will 
eventually educate themselves as to the differences I suspect.
