Thanks Anthony -
The protection was on but password protected and I don't know what the password is so - I can open it OK in Excell without giving it a password but just not in OOo.

Hi Kim,
It's possible that one or more sheets have been protected. Open the file in excel and check each sheet by selecting 'tools / protection'. If you see 'unprotect' instead of 'protect', click it, then save the file.

Excel workbook has a password on it. Therefore, OOo cannot open the file. If you can edit the file in Excel first, remove the password and save again before trying to open it in OOo.

I have an Excel workbook that will not open in OpenOffice. It gives me an

error. It's says "Read error" This file is password-protected
